“October, and the trees are stripped bare, of all they wear, what do I care?”

October, U2

Well, greetings all. I haven’t made a post in awhile and thought it was time to get back on the writing horse. It sure was a busy summer getting used to my new job and new routine and the grind continues day by day. One bright respite from the long hours and chaotic schedule however, is October, my absolute favorite month of the year. Rather than write another marketing/tech article for this post I thought I’d spill my guts on why these 31 days are so near & dear. This month captures many of my biggest joys: Football, the start of hockey season, baseball playoffs, and of course, the lovely Fall weather and colors, and the magic of Halloween.

“Every night to me, is Halloween.”

 Halloween, King Diamond

I never really got into dressing up for Halloween as a kid but I always loved the spirit of the holiday itself. Like Sheriff Brackett said in John Carpenter’s perfect film Halloween (1978), “You know it’s Halloween. I guess we’re all entitled to one good scare, eh?” This is so very true in my opinion, especially when it comes to movies. While I enjoy a good horror film any time, they take on a whole new feel this time of year, especially the classics. (For example, feel free to attempt my long-running family tradition of watching the aforementioned Halloween, on Hallowen night, with the volume blasted, all lights off, and all doors & windows open and try NOT to get a little spooked.) In addition, the iconic imagery of the season was seared into my conscious as a young lad, and there it remains: Witches, jack-o-lanterns, haunted houses, scarecrows, all the classic monsters…they resonate with me more than candy canes, reindeer and Santa Claus, and thus I tend to embrace this time of year more than any other.

“How beautifully dramatic! The cruelest savage exhibition of nature at her worst without.”

– Lord Byron, watching the storm in Bride of Frankenstein (1935)

I was recently asked by a friend after a string of cold, rainy, dreary days if I’ve been enjoying the weather. My response was a resounding “hell yes!” You see, it’s not that I particularly like cold, stinging rain, but I crave the Fall weather every Summer. Don’t get me wrong, I love Summer…to a point. Somewhere around mid-July I get tired of the heat and at that point, I just want the season to end. By comparison, I’d trade a chilly, drizzly day over intense heat & humidity almost every time. This is where many people look at me like I’m a loon but we all have our comfort zones. If there is one bad thing about Fall it’s surely foretold by that cold rain: The fact that Old Man Winter is about to awaken.

So there you have it, my affinity for October in one tiny nutshell. For me, it’s the best (and seemingly shortest), 31 days of the year. Now go carve a pumpkin, enjoy a scary movie, play in a leaf pile, eat lots of candy, visit a haunted house and treat yourself to all of October’s charms.

Til next time…
